CAD to CAD
Jens Fursund, Oct 26, 2026Converting between CAD formats now keeps your solids exact instead of turning them into triangles.
Many CAD converters move the imported data straight from its exact representation (mathematically defined surfaces and curves) to a tessellated one, where every surface becomes triangles.
Needless to say, this loses information, and it makes it hard to keep working on the model afterwards.
Convert3D does better. When you convert from one CAD format to another, the exact geometry survives:
- AutoCAD DWG to STEP and DXF to STEP, with 3D solids as real surfaces
- STEP to DWG and STEP to DXF, as AutoCAD 3D solids you can measure and edit
- SolidWorks SLDPRT to STEP, SLDPRT to DWG and SLDPRT to DXF, and the same for assemblies: SLDASM to STEP, DWG and DXF
Where a model's own geometry is too loose to rebuild as an exact solid, we keep its edges as exact lines, arcs and splines instead.
We're still improving this and adding new formats, so please let us know if you hit any issues.
How to use this right now
Try your AutoCAD DWG or DXF, SolidWorks SLDPRT or SLDASM, or STEP/STP files, and pick a CAD format as the output.
